Based in Mid Wales, Montgomeryshire Youth Music (MYM) supports instrumental and choral groups for a wide range of musical talent and interest. MYM provides a stable environment for regular rehearsals, and organises funding events, social activities and performances throughout the year.

The Tutors

Greg Jenkins

Leader of the MYMO – Montgomeryshire Youth Music Orchestra.

Greg studied for a degree in Music (BMus Hons) in Bangor University, graduating in 2012. After this Greg went on to complete a PGCE in Music from Bangor University. Since completing his PGCE, Greg has been teaching Music at Newtown High School. Greg has a host of performing experience. He is a busy accompanist to several choirs and individuals for various performances, he has played the cello in several orchestras, string orchestras and quartets playing for a variety of occasions.

Sian Edwards

Leader of the MYMCB – MYM Concert Band.

Sian works as a full time peripatetic woodwind teacher in the local area. She studied music at Lancaster University and graduated with BMus Hons. in 2009. She began teaching in September 2010 and now provides tuition in 8 local schools.

Over the years Sian has performed in the University Swing Group and Big Band, Open Score Community Band, Deep Reed Saxophone Quartet and back in her school days was Principal Flute in the North Powys Youth Orchestra.

Theo Lawrence

Leader of the MYM Rock & Pop Band

Theo Lawrence teaches instrumental Guitar, Drums, Ukulele and Bass music lessons in primary and secondary schools in the county of Powys as a peripatetic teacher, as well as lessons after school. Theo’s teaching website is www.tlmusiclessons.com.

Following an A* Music GCSE and various instrumental music grades, Theo studied at Drumtech in central London to gain a BTEC Diploma in Music Performance. After the 1 year intensive course, Theo was then accepted to the University of Central Lancashire where he gained a Music degree (BA Hons). Theo then set up his own Music Teaching business in 2009. Theo has also been in several bands and has played in venues such as the 02 Academy 2 in Birmingham.

Gez Charles

Leader of the MYMCB – MYM Concert Band.

Gez works full times as a music teacher at Welshpool High School having moved to the area in 2011. Gez studied for a degree in music (BMus Hons) at Cardiff University graduating in 2009. Over the years Gez has performed with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and manages the Cardiff Charity Orchestra; she now continues her work as Welfare staff for NYOW residency. Since moving to Welshpool, Gez has played French Horn or percussion in numerous musicals and concerts in the area and has enjoyed being involved as a tutor or volunteer with MYM.

Jayne Robinson

Leader of the String Team

Jayne Robinson studied the violin at the Royal College of Music. Upon graduation she became a member of the orchestra of English National Opera. She has also freelanced with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, BBC Concert Orchestra and orchestras in Wales including Ensemble Cymru. She has played at some of the world’s top concert halls including Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and the Metropolitan Opera New York with distinguished soloists such as Pavarotti, Jools Holland, Catrin Finch and Kathryn Jenkins.

Jayne has tutored the violin for many youth orchestras including 4 Counties, North Wales, Wrexham and teaches privately with pupils going on to some of the UK’s top music conservatoires. Currently she teaches violin and viola at Shrewsbury School, Adcote and Packwood Haugh schools. Jayne has recently accepted the position of leader at Aberystwyth Philomusica and Sinfonia Cambrensis.
